Reviving Vintage: The Central Alberta Bicycle School’s Professional Bicycle Mechanic Course

Get Certified in Bicycle Assembly, Repairs and Wheel Building

In an age where technology evolves rapidly, the charm of vintage bicycles remains timeless. At the Central Alberta Bicycle School (CABS) in Millet, Alberta, students are diving into this nostalgic allure and combining it with cutting-edge technology. Nestled at 5008-51 Avenue, CABS offers an inspiring Professional Bicycle Mechanic Course that not only educates its students in the art of bicycle mechanics but also challenges them with hands-on projects that breathe new life into classic frames.

One exceptional project from a recent class featured the talents of Marcel, Anthony, and Bill. This trio embarked on an ambitious journey to resurrect a vintage Kuwahara road bicycle, reimagining it with a suite of modern components. The project’s core objective? To seamlessly blend the classic elements of a beloved frame with the precision and efficiency of today’s bicycle technology.

Throughout their three-week program, CABS students embrace a rigorous schedule, attending classes five days a week and completing nightly reading assignments. “The CABS program is designed to immerse students completely in the art of bicycle mechanics,” states Instructor Brian Hahn. “From the basics to hands-on practice, we aim to provide the foundational skills needed build confidence and accomplished bicycle mechanics.”

For Marcel, Anthony, and Bill, the creative process in the group project extended beyond basic repairs. They selected new derailleurs, brake levers, and shifters that would enhance the Kuwahara’s performance while maintaining its vintage aesthetic. The transformation truly shone in their custom wheel-building project. Here, they selected rims, hubs, and calculated spoke lengths to create properly laced and trued wheels, a testament to their newfound skills and teamwork.

The culmination of their efforts was not just a restored bicycle but a stunning masterpiece that celebrates the union of past and present. The sleek lines of the Kuwahara frame now house a harmonious blend of sophisticated, modern components, demonstrating the students’ dedication to quality and detail.

CABS will be offering its next Professional Bicycle Mechanic Course in November of 2024. For anyone passionate about bicycles, from casual riders to aspiring professionals, this course offers invaluable insights and skills. Registration is currently open, and with spots filling quickly, prospective students are encouraged to enroll soon.
