Bicycle Mechanics Course — Three-week intensive trains Alberta’s next professional bicycle mechanics

Central Alberta Bicycle School (CABS) is proud to announce the successful completion of its most recent Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program graduates. Four students and recent CABS alumni from across Alberta — Okotoks, Sylvan Lake, and Edmonton — completed the three-week, hands-on program, earning industry-recognized certificates and leaving ready to begin or advance careers in the bicycle service industry.

Program Overview: Bicycle Mechanics Program at CABS

CABS’ Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program is an intensive, three-week curriculum composed of four core courses: Bicycle Assembly & Maintenance (BAM) CABS-100, Bicycle Repair & Diagnosis (BRD) CABS-200, Wheel Building & Wheel Truing (WBT) CABS-300, and Electric Bicycle Diagnostics (EBD) CABS-400. The integrated sequence provides a balanced mix of practical bench work, diagnostic strategy, and theory, designed to prepare learners for professional roles in bicycle shops.

Student Experience and Achievement

The recent graduates demonstrated dedication and progress throughout the program. Each student successfully earned the Certificate in Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance (BAM) and the Certificate in Wheel Building and Truing (WBT), reflecting competency in core operational skills essential to modern bicycle service. In addition, participants completed advanced diagnostic work, including instruction in electric bicycle systems through the EBD course.

“We were very impressed with how engaged and committed these students were,” said Nik Ochsner, CABS instructor for the session. “They asked thoughtful questions, worked collaboratively, and approached each diagnostic challenge with curiosity. It’s a joy to teach a group that is so motivated to learn and grow.”

Student Perspectives

Participants praised the program’s structure and instructional quality. Kevin Young commented, “The class was excellent. It was not exactly as expected, as the large amount of homework involved intensified the course and improved overall learning.” His reflection highlights the program’s rigorous pace and emphasis on mastery through practice.

Andres Gonzales added, “It’s a really great experience and an honour to be a student in CABS. Every day was a learning experience and building good relationships with co-students and the instructor.” Community and peer collaboration are central to the course design, fostering both technical skill and professional networking.

Career Outcomes and Local Impact

The program’s practical orientation supports immediate workforce engagement. Two graduates are returning to Sylvan Lake to take positions at Nomads Bicycle and Sporting Goods, bringing new skills to their local retail and service operations. The other graduates are actively applying for jobs within Alberta’s bicycle industry, targeting roles in retail service, independent repair, and e-bike maintenance.

By equipping students with up-to-date competencies — particularly in wheel building, truing, and e-bike diagnostics — CABS helps meet the growing demand for skilled mechanics across Alberta communities. Employers benefit from hires who can manage stand-alone repairs, drivetrain issues, wheel service work, and the increasingly demand for prevalent electric bicycle systems.

Why This Bicycle Mechanics Course Matters

The bicycle industry continues to evolve with advances in component technology and the rapid adoption of electric bicycles. Training programs like CABS’ Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program ensure that technicians have the technical knowledge and practical experience necessary to safely and efficiently service modern bicycles. Employers gain technicians who can reduce turnaround times, improve service quality, and support customer confidence.
