Central Alberta Bicycle School (CABS) is proud to announce the successful completion of its intensive Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program by five students and newest CABS alumni from across Alberta. The three-week program — designed to deliver practical, industry-ready skills — combines four focused courses: Bicycle Assembly & Maintenance (BAM) CABS-100, Bicycle Repair & Diagnosis (BRD) CABS-200, Wheel Building & Wheel Truing (WBT) CABS-300, and Electric Bicycle Diagnostics (EBD) CABS-400. Graduates came to CABS from Sherwood Park, Red Deer, and Edmonton, bringing diverse backgrounds and a shared commitment to professional development in bicycle mechanics.
Bicycle Mechanics Course: Comprehensive, Hands-On Training
The Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program is structured to provide both foundational knowledge and advanced, hands-on experience. Over three weeks, students complete four core modules that cover everything from basic bike assembly and maintenance through to advanced diagnostics for electric bicycles and precision wheel building. Each course blends classroom theory with intensive bench work and real-world problem solving, ensuring graduates leave with practical competence and confidence.
Students Earn Certificates in BAM and WBT
Upon successful completion of the program, each student earned certificates in Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance (BAM) and Wheel Building and Truing (WBT). These credentials recognize achievement in key technical areas crucial to professional bicycle service and repair. The certificates reflect mastery of assembly standards, accurate wheel building and truing techniques, diagnostic procedures, and safe handling practices for both conventional and electric bicycle systems.
Graduates Share Why They Chose CABS
Students attending the most recent cycle cited a variety of motivating reasons for enrolling. Derek Nadeau explained his decision to take the course was tied to a business goal: “I took this course to help me setup my own bike service centre for my store. That decision to take this course was one of the best decisions I've made in my business.” Derek’s experience underscores the program’s value for entrepreneurs and shop owners seeking the technical skills to support a professional service offering.
Brent Adam praised the instructor-led learning environment and the class dynamic: “Awesome course and Nik was great. I thoroughly enjoyed him as an instructor. We also had a nice group, which was enjoyable.” Brent’s feedback highlights the program’s supportive learning atmosphere and the benefit of collaborative peer learning.
Travis Trofimenkoff reflected on the program’s structure and long-term value: “I thought this was a very well put together program. The first week is a bit daunting with all of the information, but it is very rewarding by weeks two and three. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to expand their bike repair experience.” Travis’s recommendation reinforces that while the curriculum is intensive, the progression yields strong, practical outcomes.
Instructor Praises Student Engagement
The Professional Bicycle Mechanic Program was taught by CABS Instructor Nik Ochsner. Nik commented on the class’s dedication and enthusiasm, noting how that made the course especially rewarding: “The students were highly engaged from day one — asking thoughtful questions, pushing themselves on complex repair and diagnostic tasks, and working cooperatively in hands-on sessions. It’s always a joy to teach when a group shows that level of curiosity and commitment.” Nik’s experience reflects the program’s emphasis on interactive instruction and real-world skill application.
What Graduates Can Expect Next
Graduates leave CABS ready to apply their skills in a range of professional contexts, including independent service centres, retail bike shops and community repair hubs opening their own bicycle shops. The combination of BAM and WBT certificates demonstrates both bicycle assembly and maintenance capabilities and more specialized expertise in wheel building — a skill highly valued in professional shops. Additionally, training in Electric Bicycle Diagnostics (EBD) responds to the growing market for e-bike servicing.
